The sisters September and July are inseparable and understand each other without words. Although they are less than a year apart, it is always September who decides what happens. Both girls are outsiders with unique habits and an unconventional appearance. They fill their days with ritual games and live in their own world. When something goes wrong at school, their mother Sheela decides to take them to a remote cottage in the Irish countryside. There, cut off from the outside world, the girls become increasingly independent, but their behavior also takes a bizarre and unsettling turn.

With September Says, director Ariane Labed (known as an actress from Alps and The Lobster by director Yorgos Lanthimos) powerfully and mysteriously imagines the alienation that young women can feel. The film is an adaptation of Daisy Johnson's gothic novel Sisters and explores the complicated relationship between the sisters and the dynamics with their mother, which is both loving and destructive. Through the grainy 16mm and 35mm footage by Balthazar Lab and Labed's strong direction, this becomes a hypnotic film experience. The story offers an intense look at trauma, family relationships, and the darker sides of growing up. The film had its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
