Merian, a German-Dutch artist and pioneer in entomology, was ahead of her time as a woman. She was the first to capture the full metamorphosis of caterpillars into butterflies in her beautiful prints and engravings, showing the insects in their natural environment on the plants they lived on. Merian was a powerful woman who defied the conventions of her time and had a lasting influence on both science and art. Filmmaker and media artist Pim Zwier brings Merian's story to life in a highly original way. The film weaves together nature documentary, period drama, and art project, subtly bringing 17th-century drawings and paintings to life. Actors such as Carly Wijs, Sieger Sloot, and Pierre Bokma portray the historical figures from Merian's life, making her personal and professional journey tangible. The film’s music is provided by Holland Baroque.
