The majority of the children do not speak German at home, some families are traumatized by wartime experiences, and many face discrimination. Despite the limited resources of the education system, Ilkay navigates her classroom with care through daily adventures, defeats, and triumphs. The result is a surprisingly joyful portrait of a small community that reflects the complexities of contemporary European society.
