BERGMAN X BARTÓK

'How much truth can love endure?' This question is central both to Béla Bartók's Bluebeard's Castle (1911) and Ingmar Bergman's Scenes from a Marriage (1973). Though these works were created in different eras and art forms, they share an intense focus on the complexity of the human psyche and marriage. Both works invite the audience to reflect on the role of trust, secrets, and the deep, often unfathomable layers of human relationships. Scenes from a Marriage thus served as the perfect source of inspiration for Kenza Koutchoukali’s directing concept in creating Bluebeard's Castle. She presents the Hungarian libretto, filled with symbolism, as a modern relationship drama in the style of Bergman.

In Bluebeard’s Castle, the mysterious Duke Bluebeard leads his new bride, Judith, through his gloomy castle, where she insists on opening seven locked doors. Behind each door, she reveals a hidden, sinister aspect of Bluebeard’s inner world. The story symbolizes the dark secrets lovers can keep from each other.

See Bluebeard's Castle on the 7th of november at the Parktheater.
