In the winter of 1862, during the American Civil War, a group of volunteer soldiers explores uncharted territory in the western part of the country. Far from the front lines, their task mainly consists of waiting: for orders, for other troops, or for an attack. As these men from various backgrounds set up camp, play baseball, and play cards, they reflect on God, life, and the purpose of their mission. When the enemy finally strikes, the harsh nature of Montana proves to be just as deadly as their fellow human beings.

The Damned is a powerful drama about faith, hope, and meaning at a pivotal moment in American history. Unlike many other war films, director Roberto Minervini does not portray his story as a heroic epic with a clear line between good and evil. Instead, he presents a philosophical, intimate, and deeply human portrait of an inhumane event. Shot in the breathtaking landscape of Montana with an ensemble of non-professional actors, Minervini managed to move the jury at Cannes: his historical and painfully relevant film earned him the Best Director award in the Un Certain Regard competition.
