Cynthia's initial shock and denial give way to a tentative bond with Hortense, which throws her life and family relationships into sharp relief. As Cynthia struggles to confront her past, her brother Maurice also plays a crucial role in the drama. His marriage to Monica has its own tensions, and the family's long-buried secrets threaten to come to the surface.
