September 5 witnesses the moment that not only changed journalism forever, but continues to shape live news. Set during the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics, the film follows an American news team as they quickly transition from covering sports to reporting live on Israeli athletes being held hostage.

September 5 thus offers a new perspective on the live broadcast that was watched by an estimated one billion people worldwide at the time. At the center of the story is Geoff (John Magaro), a young, ambitious TV producer who is eager to prove himself to his boss, the legendary editor-in-chief Roone Arledge (Peter Sarsgaard). Together with the German interpreter Marianne (Leonie Benesch) and his mentor Marvin Bader (Ben Chaplin), Geoff is unexpectedly forced to take on the live reporting. As the perspective keeps shifting, the clock ticks away, conflicting rumors circulate and the lives of the hostages are at stake, Geoff struggles with difficult decisions and is confronted with his own moral compass.
