Sleepy Oldenzaal in 1961 is shaken by the arrival of a large group of Italian workers who have been called upon to provide the rapidly growing textile industry with extra hands. The Italians work hard, do not complain and steal the hearts of the Twente girls. In the meantime, the young worker Johanna is looking for freedom and tries to rise above the social norms. The growing tensions between the Twente residents and the newcomers eventually lead to the historic ‘Spaghetti Riots’. Together with her new lover Francesco, Johanna finds herself in the eye of the storm.
