After the death of the Pope, cardinals from all over the world cast their votes in the most secretive election in the world: the conclave. Cardinal Lawrence must ensure that everything goes well, despite his own crisis of faith. When sky-high ambitions result in scandal, he discovers that the late pope was far from saintly.

When the Pope dies unexpectedly, cardinals from all over the world rush to the Vatican, where they immediately lock themselves up. Digital devices are put away, doors locked and windows closed as they prepare to elect a new leader – one who will not only provide spiritual guidance to the world's Catholics but also set the tone for the future.
