On a secluded, idyllic farm in the forests of Norway, the Paynes live wild, free and self-sufficient. Maria and Nik homeschool their children Ulv, Falk, Freja and Ronja and strive to live in harmony with nature as a close-knit family. A tragic event, however, puts an abrupt end to their idyllic world and forces the family on a new path towards modern society. A New Kind of Wilderness, which won Best Documentary at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival, is an intimate and warm portrait of love, life and growing up. The story of the Paynes, their triumphs and struggles, invites us to reflect on our own life choices, our responsibility to the Earth and our children and how we deal with life after a great loss.
