“People with memories write best,” says Donya's boss, owner of a quaint Californian family business that makes fortune cookies. Yet Afghan Donya does not want to think too much about the past as she puts one good-luck message after another in the cookies. At night she lies awake, dreaming about a different life, with new memories, but she is sunk in guilt for those left behind. In an attempt to tempt fate, she sends a message into the world in search of her own happiness. Fremont is an understated but sharp story about human connection in enchanting black and white with lots of warmth and dry humor. With endearing roles for Golden Globe winner Jeremy Allen White (The Bear, The Iron Claw) and newcomer Anaita Wali Zada.
