California, 1860. When French-Canadian florist Vivienne Le Coudy and Danish immigrant Holger Olsen meet in San Francisco, they instantly fall in love. However, the free-spirited, independent Vivienne has no intention of marrying the mild-mannered veteran. She does decide to travel with im to. the quiet Elf Flats in Nevada, where they plan to build an existence together. However, the start of the civil war disrupts their plans when Holger decides to enlist. Left alone, Vivienne is determined to fend for herself, even if it means going up against the corrupt mayor and his powerful business partner Mr Jeffries, whose son just won't let Vivienne alone.

The Dead Don't Hurt portrays a passionate woman determined to stand up for herself in a world dominated by ruthless men. Vicky Krieps puts in a rock-solid performance in this feminist western directed and written by Viggo Mortensen. Besides directing, the actor also took on the lead role, music and production of his second feature film, which excels in both acting and stunning visuals.
