Hokwerda's Kind

Lin is a successful swimmer. After a career in competitive swimming, she is now seeking the challenge in open water. In recent years, she has been training for the gruelling crossing of the Channel in record time. The fact that swimmers sometimes disappear during this crossing appeals to Lin more than it deters her. As a little girl, she asked her father to throw her over the reeds into the canal. Time and time again, he threw her. Until she almost drowned once.

A few weeks before her crossing, she meets Henri, an underwater welder who, like her, thrives in danger. Lin and Henri dive head first into an intense love affair. They challenge each other to great heights, but also pull each other deeper and deeper into the darkness.

Hokwerda’s kind is inspired by the novel of the same name by Oek de Jong. Boudewijn Koole previously made the films Kauwboy, Beyond Sleep and Verdwijnen. Hokwerda’s kind is a thrilling film that subtly reduces unconscious emotions and experiences to their pure essence.
