After her husband dies, his widow Santosh inherits his job as a police officer in rural Northern India, according to tradition. When a girl from a lower caste is murdered, the charismatic detective Sharma involves her in the case. Under the wing of her new boss, Santosh does everything she can to get to the truth. But the deeper she delves into the investigation, the more she becomes entangled in a web of corruption, misogyny and casteism. Santosh is a compelling police thriller about a housewife who unexpectedly gets a job in a traditionally male-dominated environment. Director Sandhya Suri skillfully interweaves Santosh’s search for her new place in the world with themes such as patriarchal power, prejudice, tradition and mourning. Santosh premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, after which the film was internationally praised for its strong acting and visually stunning images.
