The life of 60-year-old Daniel (Richard Gere) is completely turned upside down when the childless man learns that not only did he have an 18-year-old son, but that the boy died in an accident a week ago. Suddenly he finds himself at the grave of the son he never knew. To get a sense of who the boy was, he visits people from his son's life... friends, teachers, loves. This is how Daniel experiences fatherhood for the first time in his life. He begins to identify with the boy; proud of his abilities, saddened by his shortcomings, angry at the injustice done to him. In this way, the man is also forced to evaluate his own life choices.
